Are the Dinosaurs the True Stars of Jurassic Park?

This is probably something many people have already realized a while back, but it certainly is a fascinating thought when watching the Jurassic Park film, or even the franchise in general. To a certain degree, while the first film offered some fascinating characters, I believe most people were rooting for the dinosaurs throughout the film. I remember many people flipping out every time a Velociraptor or especially the Tyrannosaurus Rex. Probably at the time, it was simply seeing these creatures come to life that probably sparked most people’s fascination with the film beyond simple nostalgia or anything else. Is that truly all of it?

Are the dinosaurs the stars of the film because they are similar to what horror movie icons are? In the end, the entire film franchise is closer to a horror film than it truly is to a family-friendly adventure romp. Our main characters are being hunted down one by one until no one is left, well, except the main characters in this case. Yes, the film franchise replaces classic horror icons with creatures that once existed and are simply going by their own nature. It is either kill or be killed in this world, especially in that in the age of dinosaurs. So, we could say that we root for the T-Rex similar to how we follow Jason’s killing sprees.

Maybe there is a different aspect to it in general? While unlike most modern horror movies, we actually enjoy watching our protagonists live to see another day, but why would we still love the fact watching them being hunted down by dinosaurs. Maybe because in a sense they also are the most fascinating to watch, as at the time, we saw human characters in every single film, but imagine the first time you see a Velociraptor staring at you through the screen. Somehow we just want to see the crazy and even bloody things they will unleash upon the characters.

In the end, it probably doesn’t matter why we love the characters, but I truly think it is an interesting thought to follow, as it is such a bizarre concept if you think about it. One could naturally also ask themselves why we even enjoy watching Freddy Krueger or Jason Vorhees going on a killing spree, but that is a topic for another day.
