Can Jurassic World Truly Start a New Franchise?
The concept of Jurassic World is a wonderful one, as we
finally will be able to see what the original Jurassic Park was going to
become, but naturally using the evolution of technology to its advantage to let
the park evolve into something more than it was back in the day. Finally,
people are able to visit the park and see all the different attractions, which
have certainly evolved from simple cages were one couldn’t see their
inhabitants to a variety of ways for people to actually be apart of their
natural environment with the so-called gyrospheres, which have been prominently
shown in the trailers. This time around we even have our first look at a
aquatic prehistoric dinosaur with the Mosasaurus, which is something many
people were hoping to see one day. Yet while I am dreaming of a sequel with an
actual aquarium showing us the various underwater creatures from those ages, I
have come to realize one thing that just maybe Jurassic World had already stopped
the rebirth of an old franchise.
What do I mean by that? Well, if you take into account that
most commonly the show is focusing around one incarnation of a camp, something
the first and third installment gave us. In Jurassic World we now actually see
the actual running park, but something the trailers seemed to already show us
is that with the introduction of a new gene-spliced dinosaur the entire
facility will be in danger. After such a catastrophe one could wonder where the
franchise could pick up from this point on as who would truly want to return to
this island after the entire destruction and mayhem. Makes you wonder if we
will ever see a constructed park again after this film.
While they could always explore the theme park after its destruction
trying to rescue it and rebuild, which would be an interesting concept that
they tried to do with The Lost World. Is there still enough potential to truly
turn Jurassic World into an entire franchise? Sadly, it seems as if this
franchise might have to stick with only one new film that shows us the true
dangers when the park is actually opened, but I do have questions regarding
where they could go from here on out without repeating what has already been
done with the franchise up to this point.
While there are many creative people in the industry, at
this point without knowing exactly how the movie ends or if it even is building
towards something beyond, it simply makes me wonder what they can do with the
franchise. Some would point out that up until this point the franchise hasn’t
been truly successful outside of the film that started it off. So the question
simply remains if the franchise should grow or simply let Jurassic World work
on its own as a look back at the franchise.
