Is There A Future For Calvin Zabo in Agents of SHIELD?
After every season finale the
question remains over our head what will happen to our favorite characters in
the upcoming season. One of the most interesting aspects of the second season
was how popular the character of Calvin Zabo (Kyle McLachlan) has become by the
end of the season. Not only was the performance amazing by McLachlan, but also
the character depth shown throughout the season, a man who is truly dedicated
to bringing his family together is forced to pay a hefty price at the end. The
question remains though what is heading his way in the upcoming third season?
A
spoiler warning for all those who have yet to see the season finale! If you are
planning to watch it, then please proceed with caution, as I will spoil what
happens to Calvin Zabo over the course of the season finale.
Poor Cal has gone through hell after
he finally after all these years found his daughter Skye, or Daisy as he calls
her (Chloe Bennet). Not only was he forced to murder his own beloved wife Jiaying
(Dichen Lachman) as the darkness slowly took over her mind, but also went
through the TAHITI program and can’t remember anything anymore of his past
life. While this is a good thing considering the people he murdered, but after
all these years trying to find his daughter he was forced to let her go once
again. Still, this time around he might finally find peace as he now runs his
own veterinarian practice and lives in peace outside of the dangerous world of
SHIELD. Now the question remains though if the character will stay at peace or
will still return in the upcoming season. So, here are a few ideas on my side
what they could do.
A
Daugther’s Hope
Daisy gave her father a last visit
at the end of the season, but the question on my side remains if that is truly
her last visit. How about at the beginning of the next season we see her adopt
a pet, probably a cat that would perfectly fit to her free-roaming personality.
Just having it around for a few episodes would be a nice touch leading to some
to believe that just maybe she visits her father now and then with the excuse
her pet needs medical attention. This slow build up to the moment we actually
see her at the clinic talking to her father while he is looking at her pet.
Even if he can’t remember, she does and feels responsible for him and would
check up on him now and then. In my opinion, this would be a great moment for
the character not only to return but maybe to help out Skye through whatever
she is going through. He could become a guest appearance returning now and
then, because “It’s All Connected”.
Two
Unlikely Friends
Are there any other characters that
could show up? Well, Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) took over the father role for
Skye ever since the first season. Wouldn’t it be a nice touch for Cal to pass
on the torch and accepting him as her new surrogate father? Imagine the
discussion between the two showing that not only does Cal remember of the
events in his subconscious, but that just maybe his old personality fully
trusts Coulson to look after his beloved daughter. Maybe, just maybe, the two
of them build up a strange friendship as a sign that if they didn’t meet the
way they did they could have been great friends. It offers opportunities to
explore more about them and just maybe allow for us to find out more about who
Coulson truly is and his past.
These are just some ideas I am
throwing out for what season three could do with the character, as I believe he
still has a lot to offer and personally, I just really hope we get to see more
of Cal in the upcoming seasons. Maybe he is the key to Skye truly becoming
Daisy Johnson and fully controlling her powers. Whatever may come, season three
of Agents of SHIELD will prove to be quite interesting.
What are
your thoughts on the matter? Hoping to see more Cal in Season 3? Leave your
thoughts below and what hope to see!
