The Marvel Cinematic Universe Is Getting A Bit...Strange?
With D23 many people were hoping to get our first glimpse at the upcoming third installment in the Captain America film, some didn’t expect any real news on the other 2016 project, Doctor Strange. Well, as this is Kevin Feige’s dream project he went all out at D23 to give us some casting confirmations, first look at concept art and even a word by Doctor Strange himself, Benedict Cumberbatch.[1]
First off, it is now
officially confirmed by Marvel Studios that Chiwetel Ejiofor will play Baron
Mordo, but it was not confirmed if he will in fact be the main antagonist in
the film. Furthermore, something that has already been confirmed by the actress
herself, Tilda Swinton will indeed play The Ancient One. Cumberbatch briefly
mentioned in a pre-recorded message, that the audience will “get girls, cars, explosions, and astral
projections into multiple universes. The usual fare.”
Kevin Feige voiced that “The goal is to continue expanding what a
comic book movie is, what the Marvel Cinematic Universe is. The comics traverse
these dimensions, and film by film, we try to do that in a cinematic way. It’s
going to be as satisfying as any movie made, and as weird as any movies we’ve
made.”
Once again, Marvel
certainly proves it is a master of secrecy, as there was no leak of the concept
art reel that was prepared, but ComicBookMovie.com could give a description to
it, which was as followed:
“Images in the
concept art reel reveal the classic origin story: a wounded surgeon seeking
alternate ways to heal his destroyed hands finds his way to a mystical Eastern
sanctuary that leads him to an order that holds the keys to another dimension.
[We see] cars levitated into the air; buidlings turning over Inception-style,
Benedict Cumberbatch in the red cape. Tilda an Chiewetel in costume, bizarre
otherworldly dimensions. Insane colors. No creatures, alas. But there will be.
Final shot of [concept art shows]: Strnage [with gray temples] doing energy
blasts from his hands. Also of note, the art for The Ancient One was an old
Asian dude. Pre-swinton casting or are we getting something weird?”
It certainly will be
interesting to see how this film will work, as it was stated it wouldn’t be
your classic origin story. Still, it seems to entail all the essentials to a
interesting Doctor Strange film.
