What Does Spider-Man Mean for the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Finally it is official and Tom Holland has been cast as our new Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but with this announcement comes the question though what exactly this means for the entire franchise as a whole. Up to this point the focus was trying to make secondary or even C-list characters become a part of the mainstream, something they were able to achieve so far, but now they are adding one of the most recognizable faces of Marvel. Not only his character is joining the team, but also his extensive rogue’s gallery, which could come with a considerable amount of implications.  So let us take a look at how the Marvel Cinematic Universe may change with the impact that Spider-Man leaves behind not only in the films, but also on the Netflix and ABC side of things.

Cameo Appearances
Let us start with probably the largest part of the franchise, the ever-expanding movie franchises that are now going to soon be adding faces such as Black Panther, Doctor Strange and Captain Marvel. So naturally even Spider-Man is once again going to be receiving his own movie franchise in 2017, the second reboot of the titular character. Still there are two years until that point comes around and the casting has already been announced so what can we expect of the character in the upcoming years until his new franchise starts once again.
As Black Panther has taken over the role that Spider-Man had in the original comic book line for the upcoming Captain America: Civil War, it was unsure what kind of role he could potentially play as rumors went insane stating that he was going to be a part of the movie. According to a recent report his character might actually have a small cameo, which would explain the long casting process involved to find a suitable actor.[1] Still the question remains if the character will cameo during the film or pop up in an end-credit sequence. This is probably the only film the character could appear in, as Doctor Strange would be a rather, pardon my pun, strange choice for him to appear in. Yet there are other opportunities given outside of the film franchises.

Could he be a Defender?
Any person who reads comics will know that Daredevil actually has some considerable history with the character. With Punisher joining him in the second season there is already a rather important character joining, but there are even more elements that connect the character to the Netflix show. Jessica Jones was actually in the same school as Peter Parker giving them an interesting connection, and could lead to a potential interesting scene with him involved. That fact actually gives me an interesting idea, how about having him join the mini-series The Defenders?
His character would give an interesting mix to the dynamic and there were even rumors surrounding Netflix trying to court Benedict Cumberbatch to play as Doctor Strange in the mini-series. So it would not be so strange to see Parker join the mix as the actor is still young and it would be a nice way to showcase the character before the film roles out. Especially with the entire Netflix MCU part is focusing on Hell’s Kitchen and it would be rather difficult to avoid Spider-Man swinging by or even just his villains popping up here or there. Hell, the Kingpin was originally a villain of Spider-Man’s, who simply grew into becoming Daredevil’s greatest enemy. Even if Spidey never truly shows up there are interesting ways to could bring in characters. Sadly Ben Ulrich won’t be seen anytime soon so maybe bring in a different reporter character? Eddie Brock could show up in all four shows and be a rising reporter with a dark side hinting at his venomous future? The potential is simply limitless.

What about an Agent of SHIELD?
How about Agents of SHIELD or Agent Carter? Well let us start with the one show that at first would seem like it couldn’t work, but even Peter Parker has great-grandparents that could have lived in that era. Maybe they were a part of the SSR and may be the reason why Parker’s parents were a part of SHIELD. Hell, take this concept and run with it. How about Parker hates SHIELD because he feels like they took his parents away from him? Would make quite an interesting dynamic between him and Coulson if they ever met, two ideals confronting each other.
Small instances can still be used in Agents of SHIELD, maybe Parkers more bizarre enemies show up in the TV show such as Shocker, who would make an interesting enemy for an episode. Maybe just have Coulson reading a newspaper from The Daily Bugle as a tie-in. As I stated before, it doesn’t have to be anything special, but small instances would certainly boost the tagline of the show “It’s All Connected”.

I won’t be going into detail what I expect from the Spider-Man movie, as that is worth its own article. Still I thought it would be interesting to explore the possibilities this new inclusion would offer. At this point anything is truly possible and naturally the question remains what Marvel Studios will truly do with it. Sadly, at this point it is difficult to say, but with Ant-Man arriving soon we might have our first hints at his existence.
