Marvel's Civil War Revealed At D23

D23 had some of the most anticipated films in its line-up from Pixar, LucasArts and Marvel Studios. One thing many were especially curious about was what they would show regarding the upcoming Captain America: Civil War film, as they had skipped this years San Diego Comic-Con altogether avoiding being compared directly to that days’ released Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer. While not much was confirmed regarding the film, or sadly even any true big announcements outside of Doctor Strange’s upcoming production, even though some may have hoped to see a confirmation for Ant-Man 2, visitors did have the exclusive privilege to watch a special 4 minute trailer for the upcoming Civl War film.

Whilte there weren’t any reveals regarding the costume everyone’s favorite wall-crawler is wearing and the trailer was sadly not published online, even though some sources did claim that it would, we luckily have some descriptions of the trailer that ws showcased.[1]

It starts off with a showdown between Falcon, Black Widow and Captain America fighting Crossbones, who is once again played by Frank Grillo in an urban environment. Some have rumored that this could be the incident that sparks the superhero registration act. After confusing Rogers after stating that Bucky is slowly remembering him, it cuts to a speech by William Hurt, who is returning as General Thunderbolt Ross, who last appeared in The Incredible Hulk, lecturing Steve Rogers that “The world owes you an unpayable debt. A lot great many people see you as a hero. There are some who prefer the word vigilante. People are afraid.”

This is once again echoed when Cap is arguing with Stark, who then simply states “Sometimes I want to punch you in your perfect teeth.” It then showcases a fight between Black Widow and Hawkeye, a first glimpse at Black Panther, being played by Chadwick Boseman and finally a scene ending with Ant-Man gushing over Captain America and that he was being recruited.

It seems that Joe and Anthony Russo are certainly continuing the storyline from Captain America: The Winter Soldier and even with all the involved Avengers, it seems to still focus very much on Captain America. According to an interview between Collider and Anthony Mackie, who portrays Falcon, he states that “We definitely have gloves on. It’s more a family dispute, and that’s what so great about this movie and the character and how they work together. It’s more so when you have a sibling rivalry. The reason why people can relate to these characters so much, is because they can relate to what they’re going through. Everybody’s fought with one of their siblings or one of their friends, and wanted to make up with them, but couldn’t figure out how to do it.”[2]

They certainly bring up an interesting point, as it is more of a rivalry between the two that had started early on in the first Avengers film. To a certain degree, Rogers and Stark are brothers due to Howard Stark, who was the one who helped Dr. Erskine create the finished formula. It will be interesting to see how their dispute continues over the course of the film and how it will resolve. Also, it is great to see this role given to an important character like Thunderbolt Ross, who has quite a gift for pushing the right buttons to get his way and that Marvel Studios never forgot about their Hulk film either.
