Star Trek Returns to Television on CBS All Access

Star Trek is finally returning to the small screen in 2017. While it is still some time off, it will require some time to get everything together to be able to offer a consistent space opera show, but it is confirmed that Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness writers Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci are invovled in the projects. Kurtzman will function as executive producer and the show will air as an exclusive on CBS All Access, a digital streaming service. Trying to bank on the success of Amazon Prime and Netflix, it makes sense for them to go this route, but it will be interesting to see if this gives them the opportunity to fund the project more effectively. The show still will have a debut on television before it starts streaming.

Regarding the story, it will focus on a completely new cast of characters that are seeking new worlds and civilizations, similar to the concept of the original show. President of CBS David Stampf stated that “There is no better time to give ‘Star Trek’ fans a new series than on the heels of the original show’s 50th anniversary celebration. Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we’re excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately."
