With Rosalind planning on infiltrating the ATCU to get inside information for Coulson, Ward makes it personal as Coulson starts hunting him down at no other cost. Malick is inching closer to fulfilling HYDRA’s original promise as he sets his plans into fruition to recover the long lost Inhuman while Fitz tries to use this opportunity to keep his promise to Simmons and find a way to save Will. Will everything come together as planned, or is a dark future in the horizon?

Here is a massive spoiler warning, as this was quite a heavy episode building up towards the mid-season finale “Maveth”. Keep that in mind as you continue on reading and be wary that if you haven’t seen the episode yet, this article will heavily spoil what has happened!

Coulson and Rosalind’s relationship has been a strong new anchor for the character this season and it was pretty heavy to see it come to this point. The episode starts off with a simple opening, as we see the both of them heal the wounds from their confrontation, as they realized that Malick was controlling everything that was happening at the ATCU and make plans for how she can infiltrate the base alongside her operative Banks. Suddenly, out of nowhere she gets shot directly into her neck and what would you know, Ward has upped his games and made the entire thing personal by killing her. I truly did not see this coming in anyway and it is a fantastic surprise to throw in at the beginning of this episode to truly make Coulson’s rage in the previews understandable. She was someone he had a strong connection with and there Ward goes and pulls the rug under his feet. Part of me wishes that she would be returning still, but I had the same feelings towards Tripp and Whitehall, but they still have not returned so I am trying not to keep my hopes up too much. Still, Constance Zimmer nailed this character and I really hope to see her potentially return a few times as Coulson confronts himself about the matter. Also, with this my “Rosalind is Abigail Brand” theory sadly comes to an abrupt end.

What did actually annoy me was that Banks got killed off pretty quickly as well, as I was hoping that he would carry on her legacy in the show and join SHIELD’s efforts, but then having him being killed off by Giyera was quite surprising, as it happened in such a sudden matter even after Rosalind’s sudden death, but man did I wish we could see more of him. Still, it certainly surprised many that Ward laid out such a plan to get his hands on Fitz and Simmons, which seeing them separated again was so heartbreaking. At this point, I do not believe there is any return for Ward from his evil side, as he literally tortured Simmons to get to Fitz and it was heartbreaking to see what these characters had to go through in this series, but I wonder if this might actually end up paying off an older promise that Fitz stated he would be the one to kill Ward. With him and Ward together on the planet, which is now being called Maveth due to the word that Fitz found earlier this season, one can only wonder what will happen between the two.

Lincoln is not in fact Ward’s younger brother, as it turned out to be someone completely different. It was nice to see the only sane one to survive the entire Ward family and while it was shocking to see Coulson abduct him to get to Ward, it sadly made a lot of sense for him to take this action especially considering him stating that he needs to go somewhere no director has gone too. While it was a great line, it does make me wonder if Coulson may have at this point been forced to cross limits that even Nick Fury himself couldn’t. Hoping that he might return once more to give some insight into what he has noticed that was happening around him. Still, seeing Ward’s younger brother actually share the opinion that Ward is an insane person was great, as it also paid off the events from last season. This episode had a lot of great callbacks to the last few seasons even giving Garret a name-drop, who I confess I still want to see return for a small cameo. Maybe the Inhuman might take a familiar appearance to play with Ward? Clark Gregg’s performance was fantastic as you felt his rage build up, but still felt that he was in control and seeing him jump into the portal from the ship was quite a surprising turn even if it sadly ended up with him getting knocked out by a rock, which kind of makes sense considering the velocity he had trying to get in there. This makes me wonder if just maybe Coulson’s Kree blood transfusion might play a role on this planet, or if he might even truly return to Earth.

May got a bit side-lined, but I agree with Coulson that after everything that had happened with Andrew she wouldn’t be in the right mindset to take over shortly as a director. Seeing Coulson make Mack the temporary Director was a gigantic sign of trust towards him, as it even played into their entire relationship from the last season and how much him losing his arm has affected the way they interact. Mack is the most neutral person in the entire group and it pushed him as a very important player for the show, so I hope to see his role expand as the “director” of the now teased Secret Warriors group. Anyone else love the irony that the man who hated the entire Inhuman stuff the most is the one to actually jump protocol and officially create the first incarnation of the MCU’s Secret Warriors? I do fear though Joey’s future though as no matter how creative his powers are, I fear for his life.
